Amen.

I see them as two distinct products. Also, lets not forget that WordPress is also offered as a hosted service for those that are just interested in selecting a theme, a few plugins and going ahead with that.

I don't know PHP and don't plan to learn it. But, as you say, Txp's tags allows me great flexibility to easily and quickly build dynamic stuff.

This allows me to focus on getting the IA right, SEO, content strategy, etc... right via a process of iteration.

Great article :)

Thanks a lot for this great video. This might help explaining my love for TXP to other designers when it comes to the question which system to use for smaller websites from a designer’s view.

Thanks for the comment Kars. Basically put, a Textpattern template is literally your HTML layout, minus the written content. You paste the written content into an Article and bring it back into the Page template using Forms. Forms use the Textpattern Tags (as do Pages) which allow you to build a custom method for extracting data from your Articles.

Here is the TXP Tag reference: http://textpattern.net/wiki/index.php?title=Category:Tag_Reference

Thanks for sharing the enthousiasm. I have only tried it a bit, but not used it for any project yet. For me there's always the question whether I want to spend all the time learning a new CMS when I can work with something like wordpress. But if it is really worth it, it may just become my next favourite CMS. How much time would it take learning to build templates with TXP? (I have experience building wordpress templates)

Great video and (basic) explanations. But please strengthen the I - as in IMHO - at the beginning of the video. This (promotion) video looks so professional and official that I think the personal view of yours should be more prominent right from the beginning.

Again: Great video and (basic) explanations.

Glad you found TXP and took the time to write about your experience. With our ongoing development efforts and fantastic community, we're on a mission to take the designers' best kept secret and make it less of a secret! Posts like this make that mission easier, thank you.

Thanks for sharing your experiences Jimmy! May I ask, how did you crack the art of creating a custom WP theme from an existing website, was it a book or an online tutorial ?

As web developers we tried the Big 3, Joomla, WordPress and Drupal and also some small ones like Perch as a CMS of choice for our clients and prospects.

What we wanted was a simple solution to use on a new or existing site.

We eventually settled on WordPress. It's got everything...except...full freedom of design. In other you have to either use an existing theme or create a new one.

Our solution to this was to take an existing site and create a WP theme on a page by page basis. Best of both worlds - CMS and existing design.
